A collection of newspaper headlines was produced to provide a quick and concise overview of the topics “talked about” by the press, which will be analyzed later. Overall, the analysis was conducted on a sample of 700 newspaper articles examined over a period from 2019 to 2020, within a selection of 11 different newspapers.
The first emerging and related topics are those of “#transport/#investments” and “#cyclability/#walkability.”
In the first case, there was a directly proportional increase between the two topics from the first to the fourth quarter of 2020. In the last year, interest in both transport and related investments has increased. In the second case, interest in cycling and walking progressively increased throughout the year, peaking in the third quarter of 2020.
Other more specific topics gained greater prominence in the analysis, geolocated and then detailed within the boundaries of the Metropolitan City of Messina. The first topic is precisely that of the “#MetropolitanCity,” where interest is focused on connectivity issues; particularly along the northern coast, regarding territorial continuity related to the Aeolian Islands, towards the city of Messina and Taormina, and some smaller inland municipalities like Mistretta and Tortorici. In a study of nearly 40 newspaper articles examined, a significant percentage is occupied by the topic of “#roadnetwork” followed by “#mobility” and “#transport.”
Analyzing the topic of local public transport, which shares the connectivity issues of the Metropolitan City but also extends to the southeast coast and the topic of the bridge over the strait, there was a peak of interest in the last quarter of 2020 and the first quarter of 2021. In a study of 45 newspaper articles examined, the overwhelming majority of the topic is “#railway,” within which, however, more than 50% of the analyzed articles deal with the railway connection of the city of Messina with the Fontanarossa airport in Catania.
Lastly, the topic of the bridge over the strait was analyzed, located, of course, in the Messina area, but with repercussions also on the coastline, north to Patti, and south to Taormina. In a study of more than 30 newspaper articles examined, this topic is treated almost equally in terms of debate and project.
